Iran envoy to UN becomes stumbling block

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2014

Iran’s appointment of a new envoy to the UN in New York should have been a routine procedure. But instead, the matter has caused another flare up of historic tensions between the US and Iran, which could threaten relational improvements and progress on the nuclear deal. Let’s pray now for swift resolution of this dispute.

When Iran appointed Hamid Aboutalebi as the new envoy to the UN (based in New York), the US took offense because they accuse him of involvement in the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis, in which dozens of American diplomats were held hostage for 444 days in the US Embassy in Tehran. The US have refused to grant Mr Aboutalebi a visa to allow him to take up the new position.  But now Iran has insisted it will not replace its new envoy and has accused the US of acting illegally by refusing a visa to the diplomat.  The UN has not yet commented on Mr Aboutalebi's situation.

Let’s pray the issue will soon be resolved and will not result in further division between the countries.

Pray for

  • Wisdom on all sides
  • Swift resolution
  • Ongoing diplomatic relations to be grounded in peace and wisdom
