Lashes for drinking communion wine: pray for successful appeal
Monday, February 13, 2017
Last year three Iranian Christians, Yaser Mosibzadeh, Saheb Fadayee and Mohammed Reza Omidi, were charged with consumption of alcohol for drinking wine during a communion service. After a court hearing on September 10, 2016 they were sentenced to 80 lashes each. An appeal hearing was scheduled for February 9, 2017. It is not yet clear whether this hearing went ahead or not.
Please pray for justice at the appeal.
These three men and a fourth, Yousef Nadarkhani, were previously arrested on May 13, 2016 because of their ministry. They have since had two court hearings but a verdict is still pending. Recently the Revolutionary Guard threatened them not to meet together or share the Gospel with others.
Please pray for strength and comfort for the four men and their families, and for a favorable verdict.
Update: Tuesday, February 14th, 2017
On February 9, the lawyer representing Yaser, Saheb and Mohammad Reza attended the appeal hearing on behalf of his clients and stressed the point that, as converts to Christianity, it is not illegal for them to drink wine because, although alcohol is prohibited for Muslims in Iran, it is permitted for Christians and other recognised minorities. The judge has said that he will deliver a verdict after 20 days.
Please pray that the judge will overturn the sentence.
