From beatings to blessing: a marriage restored
Tuesday, May 5, 2015
Afsaneh was married to a highly abusive man, Pouya. She was miserable and desperate to leave him. But the Gospel changed their lives in a way she could never have imagined.
“My husband knew how to manipulate me. To stop me filing for divorce, he constantly reminded me of the shame that falls on divorced women in Iran, and the burden they become for their parents. But then things disintegrated further: I discovered that Pouya had been cheating on me, and was addicted to drugs and gambling. It was the last straw. I was finally resolved that I could not stay with him a moment longer, and I went to the court to begin proceedings.
“I never wanted to see Pouya again, but part of the divorce procedure is a mediation session, so I had no option. Pouya told me he had found a saviour called Jesus, and that He had changed everything. I suspected this was just one of Pouya’s schemes to try to get me back. But something deep in my heart told me I could trust him now. With trepidation I went home with him.
“I watched Pouya very carefully, looking for him to slip up. But he had genuinely changed. He even went to my parents to apologise for how he had treated me. I saw so many changes in my husband’s life that I soon gave my life to Jesus too. I praise God that my husband is no longer the most feared person in my life, but rather the biggest blessing of my life. And praise God that because of his witness my family, and his family have also all come to Christ.”
