Iranian Christians serving in 6 cities after devastating earthquakes

Tuesday, February 7, 2023

Our hearts are breaking for Turkey and Syria. Two massive earthquakes on February 6th have caused unthinkable devastation. The death toll is in the thousands and is rapidly rising. Countless families are homeless or displaced, sheltering outside in freezing conditions.

There are many Iranian Christian refugees in Turkey and many Persian-speaking churches. Having connected with some of the pastors and leaders, I know they are witnessing deep suffering.

In the face of such tragedy, these Iranian churches have sprung into action. They are serving in at least six cities. Already a team has provided a meal for 200 people in one affected city, while other believers are heading out to offer help, to comfort people, and to distribute as many tents and vital supplies as they can get their hands on. They would deeply value your prayers.

"Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray."
(James 5:13)

I asked friends on the ground how we can pray. Here's what they said:

  • "Our prayer is that God will comfort those displaced, rescue those trapped under rubble and comfort those who lost loved ones."

  • "Pray for unity for the relief forces."

  • "Pray for families and children sheltering on the streets in very cold weather."

  • "Pray for comfort and wisdom in these hours instead of fear and panic."

  • "Pray for the people who were injured. Pray for the hospitals, doctors and nurses, and for sufficient blood donations."

  • "Pray for peace here in Jesus' name."

Of course, let's also lift up before the LORD the local and national leaders of Turkey and Syria as they coordinate the response. And let's pray that the church would have the resources and capacity to serve, love and comfort people in Jesus' name.

We are committed to standing with and praying for the Iranian church in the affected region both now and in the difficult months ahead. Thank you for praying with us.

Grace and peace,
