Unemployment for Ayatollah Khomeini’s baby boom generation has been something of a problem, especially among graduates. Nineteen to twenty nine year olds make up 25% of the population, and about 70% of them can’t find work. That has been having a debilitating effect, and has especially pushed back the prospect of marriage and settling down. President Ahmadinejad, originally elected with a mandate to help the poor, has tried to address unemployment in the $539 billion budget he delivered to parliament last Sunday. Entwined in the government’s plans are many projects that they hope will deliver jobs. This is good news for young Iranians. However, when the jobs are related to the state, this can be a problem for Christians. As in the past most of the budget will come out of selling gas and oil, and while in the very long term it wouldn’t be sustainable to create jobs from this income, Iran’s youth bulge will not go on for ever.
