Crisis on Iran-Afghanistan border
Monday, July 21, 2025
For decades, Iran has hosted 4 million+ Afghans who fled violence and instability in their homeland. Now, in a dramatic and heartbreaking reversal, authorities are rounding up Afghan nationals and transporting them by bus to border camps.
More than 1 million people have been deported in 2025. A quarter of a million have been deported just since the end of the 12-day war in late June.
Last week, we heard from an 18-year-old Afghan Christian who was taken to one of these border camps. What she described was dire:
The camps are in remote desert areas where temperatures reach 52°C/125°F
Many people arrive with no belongings, food, or water
Refugees are forced to pay a fee — often unaffordable — just to be released and cross into Afghanistan
Thanks to your support, this brave young woman was able to bring practical help to some of the most vulnerable in the camp before she herself crossed the border. Through her kindness and witness, two people came to faith in Christ.
Born in Iran and introduced to Christ by Iranian believers, this young Afghan believer had never set foot in Afghanistan before. Many young deportees share the same fate — sent to a country they’ve never known.
Please pray:
For God's mercy — that Iran would cease this traumatic process of forced deportation
That this young woman, and others like her, would find shelter and community in Afghanistan’s small but courageous underground church
For the protection of women and girls who will face a particularly repressive reality in Afghanistan
