It’s not a good time to be sick in Iran. There’s a chronic shortage of medical supplies across the country due to the international sanctions and internal mismanagement. The shortage is putting countless lives at risk. “My mother-in-law Fatimeh has kidney problems and she is being affected by this,” says Delaram, “Iran is slowly losing its dialysis machines because one vital part of the machines has to be imported from the West- so now they cannot make new machines or repair old ones.” The shortages are affecting families across Iran and it’s getting worse. Although the US and EU sanctions imposed on Iran do not directly ban selling medicine and medical supplies to Iran, the sanctions on Iran’s banking sector have effectively hindered the import of medicine to the country through obligating the importers of medicine to Iran to apply for special licenses. The cumbersome process has dissuaded many of the importing companies. As a result, the lives of many Iranian patients suffering from special diseases such as thalassemia, hemophilia, hepatitis, multiple sclerosis, and diabetes have been put at stake.
