A recent announcement by the director of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, Fereydoun Abbasi Davani, has re-ignited Western fears about Iran’s nuclear intentions. Mr Davani said that 164 new centrifuges will be set up at the Natanz and Fordo centres, and he expects to triple the production of 20% enriched uranium. In response to the fact that less than 5% enriched uranium is needed to generate electricity, Iran says that the 20% enriched uranium is needed for a medical research reactor for the treatment of cancer. In the West there is no certainty over Iran’s intentions. In some quarters there is extreme skepticism over Iran’s claim the programme has no military edge. However, there are other voices that warn it is unwise to assume that Iran is seeking a bomb. Iran’s position was bolstered last week by the leading journalist Seymour Hersh who after interviewing many key players said there was no conclusive evidence Iran was committed to a nuclear weapon’s programme. For Christians, and all Iranians, war over this issue would be an absolute tragedy. Continued intercession is needed that the concerns of all parties are resolved peacefully.
