New Year, New Nuclear Negotiations

Thursday, January 24, 2013

The issue of Iran’s nuclear programme is more urgent than ever. Israel’s re-elected Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to stop Iran getting nuclear weapons and newly inaugurated Barack Obama certainly does not want to be the American President who let Tehran get the bomb. But meanwhile Russia has warned Israel and the USA not to threaten Iran militarily and this week China has again reaffirmed its support for Ayatollah Khamanei’s fatwa against nuclear weapons. It is not difficult to see how the dispute over Iran’s nuclear programme could escalate into a serious international conflict destroying the lives of millions, including hundreds of thousands of Iranian Christians. However, war is still not inevitable. Christians must intercede for all those engaged in diplomacy and negotiations. There was no progress the last time talks were held between Iran and other major powers in Moscow in June 2012, but now Iran has suggested another meeting in Cairo. Meanwhile agents for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have been negotiating with Tehran to be able to conduct more thorough inspections of the country’s nuclear facilities. While it seems that an agreement will be very hard to reach, there must be hope that a solution avoiding war can be reached. Pray for •A breakthrough in any new talks between Iran and the major powers •Wisdom for world leaders, especially President Obama and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamanei •Wisdom for all diplomats involved
