Protestor's death highlights discrimination against women in Iran

Wednesday, September 25, 2019

The recent death of an Iranian female football fan has refocused attention on the discrimination women face at every turn in Iran. On 2nd September Sahar Khodayari was charged with ‘appearing in public without a hijab (headscarf),’ after having tried to enter a football stadium disguised as a man in March. She set herself on fire in protest and died in hospital on 8th September. As well as being legally required to wear the hijab in public, women in Iran face discrimination in employment and in personal matters related to marriage, divorce, inheritance, and child custody. They are also legally devalued: the testimony of a woman in court is deemed half as reliable as a man’s. This marginalisation has made women particularly responsive to the freedom, forgiveness, and redemption offered in Jesus. When Iranian women encounter His liberating love, they can experience profound healing and many become passionate evangelists. Ministering to women's unique needs is an essential part of their discipleship and vital for further church growth.  Please pray for the grieving family and loved ones of Sahar Khodayari.  Please also pray for Elam’s much-needed women’s ministry. Pray especially for future discipleship conferences for women from Iran, many of whom have suffered discrimination and mistreatment.
