Skies are stressful: last week's crash brings total to 828 fatalities since 2002
Monday, July 27, 2009
All the passengers and crew of the Caspian Airways Tehran to Yerevan flight died last week when it crashed sixteen minutes after take off. The salt in the wound for the 168 families grieving the loss of their loved ones is that this aircraft, the Russian made Tupolev jet, has a terrible safety record. In 2002 a Tupolev crashed in the North West of Iran, killing 199, and in 2006 one crashed in Tehran, killing 29. There have been at least another three accidents involving Russian designed planes since 2002, bringing the total number of fatalities to 828. This probably means that flying, which in a vast country like Iran, is a necessity, can be a little worrying. Officials are quick to point to US sanctions as the culprit, so making the country rely on Russia. But ordinary people would also be rightly concerned about the standards of aircraft maintenance.
Pray for the families of those who dies in the crash.
