Unrest in Iran

Wednesday, January 7, 2026

Since December 28, 2025, protests have rippled across Iran, fueled by profound suffering and deep anger.

Sparked by a sharp plunge in the value of Iran’s currency, protests that began with shopkeepers in Tehran have spread across at least 78 cities. Grievances have widened, with many demonstrators now calling for the end of the ruling regime.

Security forces have responded with brutality. At least 36 people are believed to have been killed, including at least three children, and more than 2000 protesters have reportedly been arrested.

Many are asking whether this unrest is different from what Iran has experienced in the past – whether it could lead to lasting change. Some are hopeful that this moment may bring greater freedom and dignity for the people of Iran. Still, it is too early to know how events will unfold.

What is clear, however, is that the Iranian people urgently need our prayers. I recently spoke with one believer in Iran who shared, “People feel so unspeakably burdened. We have faced so much suffering, uncertainty, and disappointment that many are simply numb to life.”

As the unrest – and the suffering beneath it – continues, please pray for:

  • People facing profound financial hardship due to skyrocketing inflation

  • Those who have been arrested, injured, or traumatized, and the families of those killed

  • The Church, as it seeks to share the hope of Christ in this season of fear, chaos, and uncertainty
